Beating Back Biofilms
Maybe it is generational, but I admit that I am a terrible blogger. What I love to do and do a lot of is see patients and teach clinicians. I have had a busy summer of teaching and learning. I am going to try to do a better job about telling you about what I am learining so that you can help your patients. But remember, site subscribers can always click the "Ask Beth" button to ask questions and you will always get a quick response!! Just don't look for me to blog about it.
Anyway, I want you to begin focusing on biofilms that develop in chronic wounds. If you are a subscriber and have watched Video 4, you recall that when bacteria begin to associate for the purpose of survival, they form planktonic bonds. Then they secrete a complex "blanket" that essentially protects them from things like antimicrobials. I believe that the next "hot" issue in the management of chronic wounds will be products and technologies aimed at eliminating biofilms and preventing their formation. Things like antibiofilm forming products, negative pressure devices that allow for irrigation with antibiofilm forming solutions, and cleansing techniques that can reduce biofilms are just a few that I think we'll see shortly.
Want to know just how quickly a biofilm can form in your patients' wounds? Try this experiment: don't brush your teeth for a day. That scum that forms over your teeth is a biofilm. Now that I've got your attention, pick up the July/August edition of Discover magazine. There is a great article that will help you understand biofilms and even information about biofilms in chronic wounds.
